There was a time in the past where I was up on pricing for computer equipment, (at least to some degree), and I noticed that while the prices were not the best, Best Buy usually beat out the local competition, or at least matched them and sure beats Circuit City! This weekend I found out I have to re-evaluate...

My mouse died and I looked for a replacement, here in Stillwater there isn't much selection so I used the interweb, and found a nice little mouse from Logitech that had many of the same features as my old mouse, the Creative Fatal1ty 1010.
Logitech's website had it listed for $69.66 USD. I thought yea, that's the MSRP, it will be lower in the stores, the MSRP is always a bit inflated so that the stores can say they are giving discounts... Well I drive down to OKC, and stop in the first Best Buy and wander back through the store as directly as I can to the computer section and look for the mice there. I walk by at least 10 employees and none of them has said hello except for the greeter, I'm like whoo hoo I can make this purchase and get on with my day! Sadly, no, as I find the aisle I'm looking for a kindly young dude walks up and asks me if he can help I begin to explain and bam he points me to the most expensive mouse on the shelves. I tell him thanks but no I'm looking for the G5. When he finally finds it, the price is $73.99. Let me state that again $73.99, four dollars more than the MSRP. Yea, I know it is just 4 bucks, but who would pay more than the MSRP for a product without any extras? Why is the product worth more in the store than the manufacturer says it is worth?
So I pull up Logitech's website and show him they suggest a price of $69.99, he goes off to talk to a manager. When he comes back, he says they don't match web site prices.
I'm looking at this guy now with shocked eyes. You don't match the MSRP? So then I bring up Circuit City's site and lo and behold the same price is shown there $69.99. He still says they don't match web sites pricing. I ask if he will call the local competitor and find out what they sell it for....
So at this point I'm now following him around the store, and when it is confirmed that the mouse sells for MSRP and that they have them in stock, (BB wouldn't price match if they were out of stock), he leads me to a register and has them match the price. At one point at least in this experience I had 4 clerks trying to help me purchase this mouse. No wonder they feel they have to charge more!
Anway I did end up with the mouse at the MSRP price, but I don't know if I'll be shopping at their stores much anymore. :)
